D = Dogs (Have 4 legs)

C = Chickens (Have 2 legs)

H = Heads (All animals only have one head)

L = Legs

Equation 1: D + C = H ............. D + C = 50

Equation 2: 4D + 2C = L .............. 4D + 2C = 140 Simplifying gives you 2D + C = 70 .................. Rearranging gives you C = 70 - 2D

Now you have a simultaneous equation:

Substituting Equation 2 into Equation 1 gives you:

D + 70 – 2D = 50

D – 2D = 50 – 70

-D = -20 so........... D = 20 meaning there are 20 dogs

Putting back into equation 2:

4D + 2C = 140

4(20) + 2C = 140

2C = 140 – 80

2C = 60

C = 30 so............... there are 30 chickens
